Donald was a Catholic and they were married in the Catholic church. Erma was not required to join the church. Donald and his first wife Edna had 10 children. Don farmed wheat for many years before retiring and letting his sons take over. He was also raised in LaCrosse and he and Erma attended Lacrosse schools together as children.
