Noteringar - The Olson family began in Sweden. Ola Nilsson and PehrnillaThomasdotter were married in Sweden on December 26, 1840. Their names reflect the Swedish custom of adding "son" and "dotter" to the father's given name. This custom, with variations, has been reflected in the Olson surname. For example: The word "dotter" has been dropped entirely from the girl's name; Ola's son Nils becomes Nils Olson; Nils's son Olaf, born in Sweden became Olaf Nelson, while Nils's American-born sons use Olson as a surname. Frank, a brother to Nils, insisted that he was Ola's son and adopted the surname Olsson. One has only to follow the history ot the family to note other variations.
The Nilssons, their one daughter and six sons, lived in southern Sweden in the small village of Stiby, in the parish of Mjallby, province of Blekinge, right on the Baltic Sea. Ola was a farmer,a carpenter, and a dealer in fish and bread. The children, even at an early age, undertook employment to supplement the family income, and the boys became a part of the neighborhood work corps from the age often upwards. Zenas Olson, in relating episodes in the life of his fater, Sven (Jack) Olson, provided much background information on the family.
Ola instructed Sven (and no doubt his brothers) in the scything of the grass, the cradling of the grain, the art of sharpening tools with precision, and many other useful skills. The church where the family worshipped and the village school where a meager education was acquired in a few weeks each winter were three miles away. Even though he lacked the traditional "formal' education, Ola was avidly interested in the news of the day, the variety of educational sources, and in the various forms of learning. Sensing his own lack of formal education, he allowed nothing to interfere with his children's opportunities for education. As a result, Sven found himself in early manhood with a common school education, basic elementary military training, the possessor of some skills in farming and carpentry, but faced with limited opportunities of satisfactory employment as well a san enforced military conscription. What should he do? America beckoned -- but he had no money, Eventually he went to sea. If one can obtain a copy of the Simmons' Family history, he may read Zenas's account of his father's adventures during six years at sea. During this period of his life, Sven was attracted to the Pacific Northwest. Travel folders of that region presented a picture of a countryside comparable to the young Swede's native homeland. Finally he signed on an American ship bound for San Francisco. Brother Frank also joined the crew, but the two brothers, working side by side, did not reveal their relationship. After a long journey, complete with danger and hardships, the men stepped ashore in America, January 30, 1880, and the chosen land became the new "home" land. Oregon, particularly Yamhill and Washington counties, provided the necessary employment and eventual home sites for the new citizens.
Later on Nils, Bengt, and Knut made their way to Oregon too. Peter, the remaining brother, did not follow his other brothers to America but migrated to Australia instead. Although correspondence and photographs between the families in each new country were exchanged for quite some time, it is sad to note that no comprehensive data history of the family is available. The same factor exists somewhat in the history of the members of sister Nilla Nelson's family. While many members of Nilla's family made their way to America, primarily to the state of Washingon, one daughter, Olivia, was required to stay at home and care for her parents. As a result, there is very little, if any, information concerning Olivia or any of her progeny.
(The above information is from the Olson Family history prepared by Mary Alice Helvie and printed in 1973.)
