Dear Dad,
Now I have some good news and am going to stop for a few minutes and tell you all about it. Was in Coblenz last night Saturday and Sunday so didn't hear anything about it until I got back this morning. The Third Division was turned over to the S.O.S. Saturday night so that means going home"toot-sweet". We leave the Rhineland about the 5th of August and should be home by labor day easy. This is probably the last letter I will have time to write before leaving for home as we are going to be pretty busy from now on. I suppose most of the soldiers are home and discharged by this time as we are almost the last troops left in Europe.
There seems to be quite a variety of fruits, vegetables, etc. but everything is so darn high. For instance tomatoes are eight marks a pound or about fifty cents in U. S. gold, eggs are 1 1/2 marks each or 7cents and so on. Such things as watermelons, sweet potatoes, cantaloupes and sweet corn are some of the things the Jerrys never heard of. Don't care if watermelons are $2 apiece when I get home, i'm going to have my fill.
Gee, Dad, do you ever stop to think, it has beeen nearly sixteen months since I have been home. Guess I am lucky to even be alive and besides there are beaucoup boys who have been over here eighteen months and some longer. I am going to take a couple of weeks off and do nothing but talk with you all when I get back again. Those pictures Naomi sent of little Jimmy were just too cute for anything. I showed them to all the fellows around the Brigade office and they thought he was some kid. He is healthier and stronger looking than the majority of these German kids at eighteen months.
Am enclosing a snapshot taken in the office here last week. The fellow at the right is the Sgt-Major, the other clerk and myself. Hear from Maude Riffey almost every week, and she writes such big newsy letters about the folks and Illinois happenings. She never mentions the doctor, so take it she and Doc have severed connections. I was downtown this afternoon and a happier bunch of fellows I never saw. All the soldiers are homesick and fed up with Europe, scenery and especially the Army.
The weather has been quite chilly for several days now and the Jerrys say it is a very cold and disagreeable summer. Another pecuiar thing in Germany is a funeral. Not a woman attends and all the men wear top hats and walk behind the hearse chanting some kind of song. Believe these squareheads are natural born thieves. Every day there are a bunch of them hauled into court for stealing american property. It seems that being fined heavily several times doesn't make any difference for they do the same thing right over again.
Tomorrow is inspection for the Brigade. We are to be inspected for cooties, itch, scabbies and venereal disease. Believe me they are strict as the devil, too. Was transferred from my company to the Sixth Brigade today so will travel home in lots better style than when I came over. Am a great deal more enthused over coming home than coming over. Had grave doubts about ever getting back at times, when I used to be in a fox hole and hear the big boys sailing through the air. Tell Glen I send my very best regards and tell Mrs. Miller and Thelma hello.
with love to Naomi, Jimmy and yourself, I am,
Your living son, Frank
